希臘神話裡有著這樣一群女妖，人首鳥身，名叫 塞壬 。
她們是阿刻羅俄斯的女兒們，妖嬈異常，美艷不可方物。
塞壬以歌喉魅惑過往的水手，歌聲猶如魔音，婉轉清澈，聞者失神，
故而聽見的水手們均觸礁而亡，無一幸免，塞壬隨後則吞食他們的身體。
傳說奧德修斯在特洛伊戰爭取勝後返航路過塞壬島，不顧阻攔，執意前行，並下令水手們用蜂蠟塞住耳朵。
而他自己為了親耳聽聽傳說中的美好歌聲，則讓水手們用鐵索把他綁在桅桿上。
塞壬中的大女兒Parthenope在島上見到奧德修斯的船，開始吟唱。
似天籟又似魔音的吟唱彌漫開來，瞬間攫住了奧德修斯的心智。
然而因為他被綁在桅桿上無法動彈，其他水手又堵住耳朵，他們竟就這樣安全地離去。
見到奧德修斯遠去，Parthenope投海自盡。
後來，有人說，她是真的愛上了這個男人。
